Weekly Wrap-Up: Two Weeks Worth Edition

It's bonus week for my weekly wrap-up since I didn't do one last week!  Actually, I don't think I did one the week before that either, oh well.

Last week was SPRING BREAK.  Whoo-hoo!  DH is a public school teacher, thus, we follow their schedule for the most part.

I barely remember what we did for the first part of the week.  Wait, DH ran 20 miles.  I did not.  I was responsible for making sure he carb loaded for the three days prior to the run.  He did.  It was good.

Then we were off to Cincinnati so that we could visit the zoo and attend a very large homeschool convention.  We usually go to the one in our own state, but that weekend was not a good one for us this year, so we opted to attend this one instead.  This is the first time the girls went with us.  They attended the children's convention (if you can call something with a big, blow-up obstacle course, crafts, and a ventriloquist a "convention") and they had a ton of fun. When asked if they would like to attend the convention again, both of them gave a hearty "YES!"

Highlight of the weekend:  We got to see TIM HAWKINS in concert.  I laughed until I cried.  Lauren completely cracked up.  For some reason, DH found the part about the helpful wife in the passenger seat of the car a bit TOO funny.  Hmph.  Tim Hawkins is a comic genius.  If you haven't seen any of his video clips, CLICK HERE NOW and watch!  And laugh!  You can thank me later.

Second highlight of the weekend:  I think I have solved our spelling problems.  I have been avoiding All About Spelling for a good four months now.  I saw rave reviews for it on other blogs.  Didn't read them.  A friend raved about it.  Ignored her.  Saw ads for it.  Ignored them.  I had my reasons.

Then I saw the light.  I bit the bullet.  I gave in.

I'm so glad I did.

And then, glory be, the author of All About Spelling was at the homeschool convention!  No, I did not have her autograph the books I bought, but maybe I should have because......

....today the girls were actually arguing over who got to do spelling first.  WHAT???  Now, I realize this was only day three of using All  About Spelling, but the little comments of, "I want to go first!" and "This is FUN!" and "Can we do spelling now?" have made me optimistic.

I think I'll do a more technical review of All About Spelling in another blog post though.  Maybe after we actually, you know, SPELL some words.

And finally, we have been reading Paddle-to-the-Sea by Holling C. Holling.  We decided to chart Paddle's journey through the Great Lakes.  We used this WONDERFUL website to print a huge map of the USA.  You can print maps of all different sizes from this website.  It's awesome!  We used the 3 ft. x 3 ft. USA map and had fun taping it together and then very easily tracing Paddle's route.  We're also going to use it to trace Lewis & Clark's westward journey.

I'm glad that AAS is working so well for the girls. It looks like it could be fun. I'm hoping I'll get to try it with Kayleigh one day.

I love the Cinncinnati zoo. Thanks for sharing your insights on here, Heather. I think we are going to do the map thing when we do paddle to the sea.
