Weekly Wrap-Up

I couldn't think of a good name for this week's edition of our Weekly Wrap-Up. Maybe some other bloggers came up with catchy names for theirs.  You can find out by clicking over to Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

We did have a very good week!  We were done with school by 1:00 every day but Friday!  Our school work has been taking us a looooooong time to get done each day, so I was thrilled with these results!  And the getting done even included getting piano practice done by that time!  Amazing.  The weather was wonderful this week, so we took some long walks and the girls played outside a bunch!

Here's the run-down:

Saturday....BOX DAY!!  We got Lauren's Core 4 from Sonlight.  She climbed right into the box and started perusing the book we'll be using for Bible.  Actually, she went ahead and started doing it this week.  She wanted to do it at bedtime one night, so we let her do it in bed.  DH went in to tell her it was time for lights out, and he came back and said, "It's REALLY hard to tell her to turn off the light when she's in there looking up Bible verses!"  We hope & pray that she stays this enthusiastic about it!  Lauren and I are both also reading the book of James.

Bible Verse:  We're working on Matthew 22:37-39.

First Language Lessons:  Ashley is learning the months of the year as she continues to learn about nouns.  Lauren is back to learning about adverbs and adjectives after a week or so on prepositions, and she started working on memorizing a new poem, The Bells by Edgar Allen Poe.

Just Write:  This is a nice little workbook that Lauren's been slowly doing since last spring.  It's taking her through the writing process and teaches some language arts skills, too.  I like it because she can do it on her own.  This week she worked on topic sentences and supporting details.

Math:  Ashley worked on her minus 9 facts, and Lauren worked on counting by 9s in anticipation of multiplying by 9.  Mr. Demme showed us some cool patterns with counting by 9.

History for Lauren (Core 3):  We continue reading about Eli Whitney.  The poor guy just can't get a break!  Theft, illness, fire, debt.....poor guy!   And I finally learned why it's called the cotten "gin."  I've always wondered why it was called a "gin" and no one ever told me when I was in school!  Lauren and I now know that it's short for "engine."  We're still reading Carry On, Mr. Bowditch.  Lauren is amazed at how brilliant Nathaniel Bowditch was.   She thinks it's hilarious that he found so many mistakes in the navigation books that sailors used at that time.

History for Ashley (Core K book):  Living Long Ago.....Ashley learned about the Vikings and about medieval times this week.  This is all getting me really excited to dive into Core 1 next year!

Land Animals of the Sixth Day:  We finished up the chapter about squamates (snakes and lizards).  The girls each did a venn diagram to compare and contrast snakes and lizards.  I am always amazed at what they remember from our reading!  And I'm amazed that they LIKE the notebooking activities!

Friday night we went to a free performance by three folk singers from Germany and a children's dance ensemble from Poland.  Aside from the very rude adult in front of us, it was a great!  Those kids are quite the dancers!
